Do you love making magic happen? Are you looking for a position you can customize to suit you? We are seeking an individual who is passionate about equine reproduction, and who would be excited about maintaining our existing reproduction caseload as well as expanding our reproductive services. Veterinarians with a special interest and experience in mare and stallion reproduction as well as board certified or board eligible theriogenologists are invited to apply.
Burwash Equine Services is a well established equine general and referral practice located close to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Our caseload is a varied mix of both western and English disciplines, and we are proud of our collaborative environment that encourages case discussion to facilitate optimal patient care. Our state-of-the-art facilities consist of a recently constructed 12 700 square foot hospital with 3 private exam rooms; a full surgery suite with a client observation area and modern induction and recovery rooms that allow routine rope recovery; a 12 stall attached hospital barn with isolation facilities; and with a 3360 square foot lameness and reproduction center with 2 sets of stocks, breeding phantom and repro lab with frozen semen storage.
We are a part of the distributed veterinary learning community of the University of Calgary’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and host fourth year students for both general and therio specific clinical rotations, providing ample opportunity to make a positive impact on the next generation of practitioners. Our practice has a forty year history with an excellent reputation in reproduction, and we have a strong reproductive caseload including artificial insemination with both cooled transported and frozen semen, embryo transfer, stallion collection, and semen freezing. We are interested in expanding our reproductive offerings to include transvaginal follicle aspiration. We utilize an innovative software known as theriospace for tracking our reproductive patients.
Our team currently consists of a tight-knit group of four veterinarians and two intern veterinarians, as well as a full complement of techs and TAs. We have an experienced, skilled reproduction manager whose role is dedicated to helping the reproductive veterinarian manage the breeding season. We typically hire summer students to help streamline mare checks during the busy season.
We are open to discussing how this position would best suit you, whether it be a seasonal role or a full time position that integrates into the rest of the practice outside of the breeding season here in Canada. If you are interested in seeing both in clinic and ambulatory cases in addition to the reproductive caseload, we are more than happy to discuss how this could work for you. We have been creative with the schedule for this role in the past to account for the seasonality of the role. As a practice, we are committed to improving our veterinarians’ work-life balance and general well-being and are welcoming of innovative and new ideas on how to achieve this for the team as a whole.
Calgary is a major Canadian city of over 1.2 million people, and is located less than an hour from Banff National Park, making it a fantastic place to live if you are interested in outdoor pursuits such as hiking, camping, and skiing.
