PT Peer Academic Coach
Campus Location: Primarily on the Lynn Campus. 15 Positions Available
Work Schedule: Varies; 10-15 hours per week.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The role of the Peer Academic Coach (PAC) is to promote persistence from semester to semester and a successful academic experience at North Shore Community College by providing mentoring and resources to assigned students. Coaches serve as a point of contact at the College and help students identify obstacles to academic performance and assist them by creating solutions for overcoming those challenges. Coaches help the students maximize their capacity for success by supporting and assisting them in acquiring effective study strategies and performance. The PAC will also participate in required training sessions and team meetings.
This position is designed for NSCC students and recent NSCC alumni. The mission of North Shore Community College's Tutoring and Academic Support Centers is to support the learning efforts of the students, faculty teaching, and the larger goals within each program of study.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attend required training sessions and team meetings throughout the semester.
Create records of student attendance at coaching sessions.
Refer any concerns about a coaching student to supervisor.
Maintain a working knowledge of and stay current about the other areas of the college to ease the students' process and help students demystify college policies and procedures.
Encourage students to achieve self-awareness to gain a greater understanding of their strengths, values, and interests.
Work with new students to ease their transition to college life.
Build relationships with students by maintaining active support through check-ins and offering reminders, using multiple communication platforms (e.g., phone, email, chats, google messaging, and Zoom video meetings.) Reach out to assigned students as directed.
Assist students with academic preparation, time management, study skills, and academic technologies.
Assist students to identify barriers, explore solutions, and leverage resources by encouraging students to take an active role in their learning.
Maintain a working knowledge of and stay current with college resources, and appropriate personnel so as to educate students on college policies and procedures. Refer students appropriately to Tutoring, Academic Advising, Financial Aid, Accessibility Services, TRIO, and other support services.
Track and maintain accurate records of conversations and interventions with students.
Meet with supervisory staff regularly.
Perform other duties as necessary and as requested by the supervisor.
Requirements:
Cumulative grade point average of B (3.0) or higher and good academic standing at North Shore Community College;
Recommendation from an NSCC staff or faculty member;
Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment;
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Cooperates and works well with both peers and supervisors.
Ability to work remotely if needed with access to reliable internet for regular video conference activities.
Ability to become familiar with appropriate systems such as Navigate.
Demonstrates qualities of patience and empathy; respect for students of all genders, gender identities, cultural/ethnic backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
Successful experience interacting with culturally diverse populations
Problem-solver with the ability to locate and disseminate the appropriate resources according to student need.
Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
