COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT (MOVE), MIT Museum (MITM)-Collections Team (part-time, 30 hrs/wk.), to assist with relocating most of MITM's collections to a new off-campus facility. Responsibilities include rehousing, packing, crating, and unpacking artifacts; providing safe transport of objects/collections materials to and from storage, workstations, and other museum areas; tracking and recording object locations throughout the packing process using MITM's information management system; building custom boxes, mounts, pallets, or other supports for artifacts; assisting with inventory and photography; light cleaning; loading and unloading trucks; general maintenance/organization of the packing work areas, tools, and machinery; reviewing environmental monitoring sensors and data; supervising temporary packers and training collections staff on packing/building techniques; and performing other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent;two years' experience as preparator or in a similar position in a museum, gallery, or arts organization; knowledge of museum standards and best practices in and experience with the care, safe handling, packing, and crating of 2-D and 3-D artifacts; basic woodworking skills related to crating and custom pallet fabrication; knowledge of archival materials and fine art packing techniques, including proficiency with custom box-making, soft-packing, and cavity packs; experience with shop equipment, power and manual woodworking tools, scissor lifts, forklifts, and other specialized warehouse equipment; basic computer skills and experience using museum and/or collections databases; valid MA license; excellent interpersonal skills; and ability to work collaboratively. PREFERRED: experience with matting and framing of works on paper; familiarity with cameras, photography, and image editing software (e.g., Photoshop and Lightroom); and familiarity with the Mimsy XG collections information management system and database. Work conditions: climbing ladders (of at least ten feet or more); and lifting, pushing, pulling, and supporting heavy objects, crates, and other items weighing up to 70 pounds.
