Position Summary The Extra Help Reimbursement Coding Representative is responsible for ensuring all physician clinic and surgical billing are received, reviewed and submitted with appropriate CPT and diagnosis codes. The Reimbursement Coding Representative may also assist in various revenue cycle operations including, but not limited to: financial clearances, post authorizations, corresponding with third party insurances, investigate denials and respond to supplemental request.
Duties & Responsibilities
The surgical coder reviews, analyzes, and codes professional/physician medical record documentation to include, but not limited to, major surgeries in the operating room, medical diagnostic and surgical information for various practices. This coder works collaboratively with surgeons to ensure the accuracy of the code sets on the surgical case
Manages surgical coding, ensuring that all phases of the medical billing process are completed in a timely manner according to department standards.
Assign codes to diagnoses and procedures, using ICD (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes.
Ensure codes are accurate and sequenced correctly in accordance with government and insurance regulations.
Communicate with other clinical staff regarding documentation.
Search for information in cases where the coding is complex or unusual.
Ensure all charges are financially preauthorized.
Ensure all charges have accurate point of service.
Ensure that all codes are current and active.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent.
Any one or any combination totaling 18 months from the following categories:
Work experience in a healthcare setting (i.e., hospital, physician's office, nursing home, billing agency) utilizing ICD-10, and CPT coding systems, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), and the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) systems of coding to assign codes for services provided to patients.
College course work relating to healthcare operations includes the following topics such as Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, ICD-10 Coding, and CPT Coding, or closely related courses.
6 semester hours equals 6 months
12 semester hours equals 12 months
18 semester hours equals 18 months
Current designation as Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or a Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) (formerly CPC-H certification) or current certification as a Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) satisfies all the requirements for this classification.
Preferred Qualifications Must have 3+ years experience in surgical coding in any of the following specialties: general surgery, vascular surgery, colon and rectal surgery, plastic surgery or transplant surgery.
