The Schoolhouse is a growing, independent, K-8 school located in the Hayes Valley District of San Francisco. The School’s intentionally small size, experienced and passionate teachers, experiential curriculum, and active parent participation model provide a unique opportunity for families seeking a community-minded progressive education that challenges and supports their child. Founded in 2011 by a small and dedicated group of teachers and parents and two students, the Schoolhouse now enrolls 101 students.
Teachers at the Schoolhouse lead mixed-grade classes. Currently the school is configured with a mixed Kindergarten/1st grade class, a mixed 2nd/3rd grade class, a mixed 4th/5th grade class, and three classes that mix students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. K-5 averages 12 students per grade. As we grow, middle school will average 18 students per grade.
Flex Teacher/Physical Literacy Teacher
The position is 20-30 hours/week and reports to the Head of School.
Responsibilities May Include
Physical Fitness and Nutrition Education
Teach sports units (e.g. basketball, tennis, soccer, volleyball), organize games and develop challenges that promote physical activity for students from Kindergarten to 8th grade. The goal is to develop motor skills, encourage a practice of physical fitness, and develop healthy eating habits.

Classroom responsibilities
During the school day, when not attending to other responsibilities, teach and or substitute teach in classrooms. Provide support for teachers and students as needed, including snack and lunch times. Uphold COVID safety measures.
Hayes Valley Playground and Alamo Park
Support daily all-school recess whether on campus or at local parks/playgrounds. Assist with the walk to park, supervise or teach at the park, and the walk back to campus. Take responsibility for student safety on the walk and at the park, as well as supporting recess activities at the park.
Extended Care Program responsibilities
Starting at 2:00pm or 3:00pm, flex teachers teach in the after-school program, including supporting free-play and snack.

Requirements
Must have experience working with elementary and middle school age children and know how to incorporate social-emotional learning (SEL) and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) into the curriculum. Also, must have strong speaking and listening skills, able to supervise students, and interact with parents, other teachers and school administrators. COVID-19 vaccination required. Preferred, an individual seeking a career in education.
