The Position: The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Music. The ideal candidate will share the College's commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. Teach major and general education music courses that may include: Concert Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Ensemble, Musical Theater Pit Orchestra, Music Fundamentals, and other classes determined by the Dean in consultation with the Music faculty
Select and maintain the music department sheet music and instrument collections
Actively recruit music students and outreach with our local community through collaboration with local high school programs and other music and arts organizations
Manage the production of on and off-campus performances in consultation with department and division colleagues
Maintain college academic standards according to the expectations of each course level
Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions
Foster creativity and the development of music practice and performance skills
Drive the design and growth of the Music Department through strategic planning, regular department engagement, resource requests/program review, innovative programming development, and the cultivation of a robust performance calendar
Comply with District, college, and division policies in the performance of duties
Maintain on-campus presence, including office hours and on-campus teaching, as well as online functions as assigned
Participate in department and division meetings and serve on college-wide/district committees, task groups, and strategic initiatives
Assume professional duties and responsibilities such as curriculum revision, course development, Student Learning Outcomes assessment, research, peer evaluation, mentoring, orientation, and program review
Requires teaching evening ensemble classes as a part of regular teaching assignment
Effectively use technology in communication with students and colleagues, and engage in college-wide professional development training for Quality Online Teaching and Learning (QOTL)
Other duties may include, but are not limited to: developing curricula appropriate to the different learning needs of students; providing a classroom environment that promotes and stimulates learning; utilizing current teaching techniques that are effective in a diverse classroom setting
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a Masters or above in music OR Bachelors in music AND Masters or above or above in humanities OR the equivalent (see below)
Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence: The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.
Academic Background Equivalence: Related to disciplines in which a Masters Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:
i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelors or Associates Degree, and ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.
Professional Achievement Equivalence: The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:

Possess recent successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach college-level courses in the field of instrumental ensemble music (e.g. Concert Band, Jazz Band, Orchestra), music fundamentals, and music appreciation, and incorporating critical thinking skills for a diverse student population, including students of various ages, abilities, multilingual and multicultural backgrounds
Demonstrate experience as a conductor and instrumental performer
Have the desire, ability and vision to help develop and foster a dynamic music department
Are able to communicate fluently and effectively orally and in writing
Are willing to work with faculty and staff in a spirit of collegiality at department, division, college and district levels
Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher: In addition to a short classroom lecture or lab demonstration that will be part of the interview process, appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement showing that the candidate has:
An understanding and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
A commitment to the teaching profession, its goals and ideals, and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college
Knowledge of current theories and methods in the teaching of classroom courses as well as performance courses
The ability to use innovative pedagogy in the classroom, such as collaboration with other disciplines, live performance, or interactive learning
The ability to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of ones own pedagogy and modify techniques to engage students
A commitment and enthusiasm for creating supportive relationships with students
The ability to develop instructional learning outcomes and to assess students achievement of those outcomes
The ability to develop curriculum, both transfer-level and electives, and teach courses for a music program with California articulation standards
The ability to develop and use teaching methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in learning
Experience with computer-aided classroom instruction and related use of the internet
A commitment to professional growth by keeping current in subject area
Preferred Qualifications:
Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes
Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students
Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the classroom and on campus
Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive teaching in music
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within music courses and classrooms
Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution and AANAPI designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices
Expertise in teaching and conducting music instrumental ensembles in a variety of music genres including: Concert Band, Jazz Band, Symphony Orchestra, etc.
Primary performance instrument in band or orchestra
Experience organizing and conducting instrumental ensembles for music theater productions
Experience with building and maintaining an instrumental music program at the college or high-school level with recruitment outreach such as collaborative concerts, touring, festival/competition participation and/or work as a clinician or adjudicator
