The IU Student Success Corps program, out of the IUPUI Office of Community Engagement, is launching a new 2-year kindergarten to second grade literacy project in collaboration with Indianapolis Public Schools. IU SSC is looking for committed individuals who want to support the academic and social emotional growth of elementary school students by serving as a tutor and mentor.

Upon the completion of training, tutors and mentors will become certified Orton-Gillingham specialists and receive a certificate of completion. In addition, individuals in this position will gaincultural knowledge through community interactions. They will advance their communication skills by building relationships with students, caregivers, peers, school personnel, and staff. In addition, individuals in this position will strengthen employability skills with a robust professional development program. It is expected each tutor/mentor will serve at least 2 students twice a week at minimum.

General Responsibilities

• Successfully complete a two-week Orton-Gillingham professional development
• Successfully complete four-week practicum before providing instruction at full rate of pay
• Provide literacy intervention to K-2 grade students as well as socioemotional support
• Create individualized lesson plans for each session and upload them on the database system
• Build effective and caring relationships with K-2 grade students
• Foster academic and social emotional development and growth of student participants
• Assess students' needs through observation, engagement, and ongoing assessments
• Input and track data on each session that takes place within the data management system
• Always maintain confidentiality of student information and data
• Conduct yourself in a professional manner
• Attend monthly scheduled PD sessions
• Respond to emails and other communications promptly

EDUCATION

Required

• High School diploma or GED

Preferred

• Associate degree

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

• Experience in teaching, tutoring/mentoring, or literacy intervention highly desired

SKILLS

Required

• Openness to receiving constructive feedback and coaching via observations
• Ability to implement strategies for student success
• Ability to work collaboratively with students and staff of diverse cultures and backgrounds
• Ability to work a set schedule each week between hours indicated in job description
• Ability to commit to at least 1 year in the tutoring position with ongoing professional development sessions
• Demonstrates patience, empathy, and a willingness to take initiative and try new ways of teaching students
• Capable of cataloging notes from tutoring sessions, engaging with a payroll system to log work hours, and complete other tasks with minimal supervision
• Ability to communicate promptly with supervisors and school staff via text, email, and other methods of communication
• Skilled in problem solving and communication (verbal and written)
• Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with students, teachers, families and fellow IUPUI staff
• Knowledge of and experience with urban school settings, social services, youth development, or community development

Preferred

• Bilingual, particularly Spanish

This part-time position requires travel to schools.

This position will require a 2-week training in the basic Orton-Gillingham approach followed by a 4-week practicum. Candidates with Orton-Gillingham experience will still need to attend the training as a requirement of the position. Once the training is complete, this contractual position will continue through the academic school year, with the potential of summer programming.

$15.00 per hour during the 6-week training course and $25.00 per hour upon completion of training and obtaining the Orton Gillingham certification
