Qualifications: SSTE 398L-03 - Methods for Liberation - Art Subject Matter Instructor
Moraga Campus: February 6, 2023 - May 26, 2023; Tuesday, 5:45pm - 8:30pm
In this class, we will engage in critical self-reflection to discover who we are as engaged educators. We will build educational partnerships with one another and mentor teachers as we form critical inquiry groups to interrogate and augment our teaching practices and the beliefs that inform them. We will learn how to communicate nonviolently and how to build restorative and deeply connected learning communities. We will build project based learning units that are developmentally, linguistically, and culturally appropriate; that are aligned with California state subject matter standards and real life applications; that provide students 'choice and voice'; that include assessments for, assessments of, and assessments as learning; that integrate the arts and technology; and that allow for 360 degree reflection and evaluation. Finally, we will begin the work of learning to be teacher leaders, invested in our continual personal and professional growth and community partnership.
Within the subject matter breakouts, teacher candidates are supported in the development of pedagogical content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and content knowledge in the subject matter disciplines. Instructors in these subject matter breakout sessions will be expected to provide space within the sessions for student discussion of classroom teaching, learning, and leading strategies, restorative justice practices, and the intricacies of being a teacher within the respective disciplines. Subject matter experts should also integrate the arts and technology.
Candidates in the Single Subject Credential Program are placed at one secondary school site for a full year, gradually taking on lead teacher responsibilities. In this way, they are able to more fully see how a classroom culture and school community develops over time; they can also be more active parts of that school community.
An instructor is sought with teaching experience in Art. The selected instructor will work closely with the faculty teaching the general methods portions of the course. This course carries a 3-credit load and meets every week on Tuesdays from 5:45-8:30pm.
Requirements to teach this course:
Highly Preferred - Experience teaching a Content Breakout for SSTE 398L-03
At least four years experience teaching in a Title I secondary public school with majority students of color within the past 10 years. Subject area of expertise/credential should be specified in the resum.
Experience teaching and utilizing the latest research-based strategies in critical pedagogy, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and/or funds of knowledge/community cultural wealth
Effectively uses multiple pedagogical strategies including: community building activities; Socratic Seminars; heterogeneous groupwork
o Does not rely only on lecture and discussion-based teaching techniques in 50% of teaching
Has used alternative forms of assessment (performance, presentation, and/or multimodal) with secondary students and can guide teacher candidates in the development and use of standards-based assessments
Masters degree, preferably in Education or the Subject Matter Discipline
