POSITION SUMMARY The role of a coach at Catlin Gabel School promotes an appreciation of physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Coaches provide leadership and supervision for team, and work closely with the other staff and administration within the athletic department and designated school division.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES Coordinate and supervise team of student athletes and assistant coach(es) (if applicable) Promote an appreciation of physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship Design and implement an effective program for schedules for practices, games and athletic events Support the effective maintenance of athletic facilities and equipment Assist in managing uniform inventory for middle and upper school teams
Athletic Leadership at Catlin Gabel School: Articulate the importance of athletics and physical activity Value all athletics activities (and their potential) equally Adapt and innovate programming to the unique circumstances of 2020-2021 per developing OSAA guidelines and the constraints of the pandemic Occasional to frequent travel off-campus to attend athletics events
Mission Leadership as a Catlin Gabel Educator: Support and uphold Catlin Gabel’s Mission as an educational leader internally, in Portland and the greater community, and within the OSAA Recognize and celebrate athletics accomplishments (individual and team efforts)

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS Collaborates with the Assistant and/or Director of Athletics in matters of on-campus athletics programming. Frequent interaction in person, by phone or in writing with individuals of various backgrounds and relations to the school, including students, families (current and prospective), colleagues, outside associates of the school, visiting schools, and businesses.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES Assists in the supervision of assistant coaches (if applicable) and student athletes.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The requirements listed below are representative of physical requirements and may not be all-encompassing. Incumbents must be able to perform job duties with or without accommodations. Position is split between inside (e.g. gym, tennis court, etc.) and outside environments Ability to lift/maneuver items up to 50 pounds Ability to perform actions related to the sport, which may include: Running/Sprinting (for extended durations of time) Throwing Kicking Jumping Weightlifting/training Stretching Occasional to frequent exposure of various weather conditions Occasionally drives or otherwise travels throughout metro area Occasional operation of a computer and other office machinery (e.g. copier, printer, fax) requiring manual dexterity and close vision Ability to navigate a 67-acre campus between multiple buildings, athletic fields, and uneven terrain
SCHEDULE This position is seasonal (based on the selected sports season and OSAA regulations). Attendance at most athletic events (including evening games and some weekends) is required.
Minimum of three years’ teaching, coaching, athletic experience BA or BS in physical education, health, education, or related field from an accredited college or university preferred CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire NFHS/OSAA Coaches Certifications (prior to hire) Current First Aid/CPR Card (prior to hire) Reliable form of transportation to attend athletics events within Portland metro area
Catlin Gabel School is a coeducational, independent day school located on 54 acres in the West Hills neighborhood of Portland, Oregon formed in 1957 by the merger of the Catlin Hillside School, which had been founded as Miss Catlin’s School in 1911, and the Gabel Country Day School, whose roots extend to 1859 with the founding of The Portland Academy. The campus itself is a former farm with beautiful trees, fields, and plantings that has been modernized and upgraded over the years with new and renovated buildings that blend in with the natural surroundings.
