(Job #520745) Registered Nurse I - Hourly Pool at $23.53-$45.41/hour. This is a part-time, on-call, hourly position in the Student Health Center. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The purpose of Student Health and Wellbeing Services (SHWS) at Humboldt is to help students achieve and maintain academic success and lifelong health and wellbeing by providing timely and appropriate primary and acute health care, disease and injury prevention education, professional outreach, referrals, educational services and campus consultations. Student Health & Counseling staff work under the mandate of the California State University in delivering a specified range of health care services which requires that employees understand, support, and comply with the mission, goals, policies, and procedures of SHWS, and accept the concept of a team and the multidisciplinary approach to providing quality health care. The SHWS team works closely together to serve their mission, while also valuing a warm, fun, and collegial environment with exceptionally dedicated staff who are excited to welcome new staff members to our team.

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Registered Nurse is responsible for managing patient flow and workload, and for performing a variety of nursing care duties associated with acute ambulatory care for students. The scope of practice includes the observation of the signs and symptoms of illness and injury; reaction to treatments, abnormal characteristics, and general physical condition; implementation of standardized treatment procedures, including emergency procedures; and direct and indirect patient care services that ensure safety, disease prevention, and restorative measures, including administering medications and therapeutic agents to implement a treatment, disease prevention, or rehabilitation regimen ordered by a physician or similar practitioner. The person who fills this position must be competent and sensitive to patients presenting with mental health issues, as well as sexual health concerns, have the ability to manage clinic flow effectively during busy clinics, and be able to assess patients for level of medical care, ranging from emergency situations to discharging patients under protocol. RN I will perform the full range of standard nursing care duties following procedures and protocols, including observing, interpreting, recording, and reporting patient symptoms, reactions and behaviors.

Work assignments typically include: prepare patients for medical examinations and treatments, and assist physicians and advanced practice clinicians in clinical examinations; perform therapeutic measures and nursing services as ordered by a physician or similar practitioner such as, but not limited to, performing TB and other skin tests; performing electrocardiograms; conducting irrigations; observing, recording and treating drug reactions; applying and changing dressings; measuring and fitting for crutches, and teaching to walk with crutches; ear lavage; and similar treatments and procedures; support general health center maintenance, such as cleaning and sterilizing equipment and instruments, setting up treatment trays, checking refrigeration equipment is operating at required temperatures for storage of medications and specimens; stocking supplies; assisting in maintaining and filing medical records; may assign tasks to and review work of clinic support staff within their scope of practice; and keep current with registered nursing field requirements and maintain competencies relative to the scope of practice.

Student Health staff work under the mandate of the California State University in delivering a specified range of health care services which requires that employees understand, support, and comply with the mission, goals, policies, and procedures of the Student Health Center; and accept the concept of a team and the multidisciplinary approach to providing quality health care.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  Professional nursing experience that shows evidence of the ability to work independently;

  Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of medical terminology and equipment; thorough knowledge of uses and effects of medicines

  Ability to apply nursing knowledge and techniques; ability to observe and record or respond with therapy to reactions, symptoms, and behaviors; ability to keep records and prepare reports; ability to gain the interest, respect and cooperation of patients; ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff, students and others; ability to analyze emergency situations accurately and take prompt action as required

Minimum Qualifications:

• 
  A valid State of California Registered Nurse license.
  
• 
  Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.
  

Preferred Qualifications:

• Minimum of one year of employment as a Registered Nurse.
