Duties of a Registered Nurse for the Dental Care Center may include the following but are not limited to:
PATIENT CARE
- Assists the resident and faculty member in all of the conscious sedation cases. This includes, assess the patient's condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients.
- Administer and be responsible for all medications.
MATERIAL MANAGEMENT
- Availability of materials and equipment for treatment of patients. Orders necessary supplies and materials through Lawson and the dental stock room. Check expirations of all medications, OTC meds and medical supplies for Anesthesia and Oral Surgery departments, orders and re-stocks as needed.
STAFF EDUCATION AND ANNUAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT
- Provides in-services for the staff, dental students, and dental assistant students on use of medical equipment, clinic emergencies, etc. Provides re-certification on the use of glucose monitor to staff. Provides lectures to dental assistant students.
CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
- Attends meetings and participate in all aspects of improvement programs and projects for the Dental Care Center. Work closely with Pharmacy consultants during their quarterly inspections, and implements their recommended changes and updates.
OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE
- Assists the resident and faculty members in all areas of IV conscious sedation cases. This includes assess patient condition and nursing needs pre, during, and post operatively. Coordinates nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment in an effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients. Provides patient education related to treatment and procedures.
- Order supplies/materials as applicable.
- Administers, documents, orders and stores prescribed medications appropriately.
- Maintains crash cart and other emergency equipment.
- Provides Covid antigen testing to patients.
- Performs glucometer testing as needed.
- Performs Covid screening for patients and visitors.
- Assists providers with procedures as needed.
- Attends meetings and participates in areas of improvement programs and projects for the Dental Care Center as applicable including providing in services to staff, residents, and student.
- Maintains appropriate certifications and competencies including ACLS,BCLS, glucometer trainer/testing, and others as needed.
Local Duties:
- Patient Care: IV sedation consult, patient education, review health history, monitor and records vital signs during sedation and recovery. Prepares operatories and sets up equipment such as nasal O2, N2O, draws up medication, crash cart. Reviews sedation schedule, reviews all pre-op and post-op instructions, checks that patient has a ride home, consents are signed, reviews all prescriptions, accompanies patient out to car. Follow-up phone call made if sedation patient and answer any concerns or questions. Assist with office duties as needed.
- Medication management: monitors and orders availability of materials, equipment and medications such as OTC medications, medical supplies for anesthesia and oral surgery department. Checks BME inspection dates on medical equipment and arranges inspections as needed to remain compliant.
- Continuous Quality Improvement: Participate in Accreditation Inspections for the SDM DCC and DOH Inspections for the SDM DCC. Attend meetings and participate in Quality Improvement projects. Work closely with the pharmacy consultant during quarterly inspections and implement necessary recommended changes.
- Professional Education: Attend all necessary continuing education courses, maintain current RN licensure, maintain current ACLS as well as SDM DCC credentialing.
- In-Service: Trains and recertifies clinical staff members on the use of blood glucose (Glucometer). Trains students, residents, and staff with required annual certifications and trainings.
Working Conditions:
Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.
Teaching and Research Nurse 2 (Registered Nurse 2)
Required: Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice as a registered nurse in New York State and one year of post-licensure acute care nursing experience. A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing may be substituted for one year of the experience.
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and at least one year of previous hospital acute care experience.* * PALS certification. Prior procedural area experience. Prior Dental/OMFS experience. BCLS certification. ACLS certification.
Promotion: One year of permanent competitive service as a Teaching and Research Center Nurse 1, Grade 14.
*Acute care is defined as medical services provided for illnesses that are short-term (usually less than 30 days), intense, and have a relatively severe to very severe course, requiring knowledge and expertise in the vigilant monitoring of subtle changes in the patient's condition, as well as ability to quickly recognize and identify potential problems and conditions resulting from a previous disease.

Part Time Position: Mondays & Wednesdays: 8:30am-5pm, Tuesdays 8:30am-1:00pm
