Our Instrumental Music Program
The Instrumental Music Program began in 2017 as part of Meridian's core curriculum, offering 4th and 5th grade students the experience to rehearse and perform in a mixed-grade ensemble (Meridian Music Makers), and choose an instrument to study: flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone, with an emphasis on learning by ear. Starting in the fall of 2022, students will participate in the Instrumental Music Program offered as an afterschool class, providing more weekly playing time for participating students. 

Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision and in collaboration with the Lead Instrumental Music Instructor, plans, executes, and leads the afterschool Instrumental Music Program to first- and second-year students learning flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone. This Instructor leads the brass sectional and manages the full ensemble

Expected Time Commitment:
The Instrumental Music Program runs for approximately 28 weeks, split into the three afterschool enrichment program seasons: Fall (tentatively September 12th to December 9th), Winter (tentatively January 9th to March 31st), and Spring ( tentatively April 17th to June 9th). The exact dates are determined in collaboration with the Extended Day Associate each year. The Co-Lead Instrumental Music Instructor is responsible for one hour of curriculum preparation and planning each week, along with three contact hours each week with students as follows:

Mondays, 3:20 – 4:30pm, Sectional 1
Wednesdays, 3:20 – 4:30pm, Sectional 2
Fridays, 3:20 – 4:30om, Ensemble Rehearsal

Additionally, the Co-Lead Instrumental Music Instructor is available for two concerts a year, including additional rehearsals and set up and break down for each concert, as determined in collaboration with the Extended Day Associate and the Head of School.

Specific Responsibilities

• Plans and delivers exceptional instruction for two sectionals weekly of up to fifteen 4th and 5th grade students each, depending on students’ instrument choice, for trumpet and trombone
• Assists the Lead Instrumental Music Instructor with all applicable curriculum, materials, and programming for the full ensemble
• Assists the Lead Instrumental Music Instructor with one weekly full-ensemble rehearsal of all four instrument sections of approximately 30-50 students
• Assists the Lead Instrumental Music Instructor to coordinate and plan the logistics of two annual concerts (mid-year and end-of-year), organize rehearsals, recruit accompanists, work with the Extended Day Associate to reserve rooms and other event equipment as needed, and plan concert programming
• Demonstrates best instructional practices to deliver a high-quality, developmentally appropriate curriculum to students
• Actively creates and maintains a well-managed, positive classroom environment that supports student engagement and motivation
• Understands and supports the school’s mission through professional conduct and actions which demonstrate the core values and philosophy of the organization
• Initiates growth and change in own intellectual and professional development, seeking out feedback and other opportunities to learn
• Establishes and cultivates community relations by maintaining open dialogue with all the School’s constituencies
• Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the school’s documents
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Performs other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required
• Experience in teaching brass instruments (trumpet and trombone) to emerging learners
• Experience working with elementary school-aged children
• Experience working in an independent school environment preferred
• Excitement for teaching improvisation, teaching by ear, and moving “off the page”
• Ability to work as a team with another educator to coordinate the program
• Knowledge of the beginner capabilities and challenges of either the flute and clarinet or the trumpet and trombone
• Proficient technology skills and the knowledge and ability to integrate technology into the curriculum.
• Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills
• Flexibility, maturity, and a sense of humor
• Ability to keep information in the strictest of confidence
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity
• Ability to stand, go up and down stairs frequently, crouch, twist, bend, squat
• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds, interact with students, and move around the classroom
• Ability to work outside in any type of weather
