Position Summary
Reporting to the Instructional Technology Manager at the Columbia University School of Social Work???s Office of Computing and Instructional Technology, and working closely with the Assistant Director, the Technical Support Specialist (TSS), will be responsible for providing technical support to instructors in an online and hyflex classroom environment (on-campus support) as well as online and hyflex events hosted by School. The candidate will provide guidance and support on the use of instructional teaching tools such as polls, slides, videos, breakout rooms, and other assets. The TSS will also provide technical support and guidance before, during, and after each class session for the course they are assigned and any events that may be in-person, online or hyflex.
Responsibilities
For on-line classes and events: provide technical assistance and guidance on online teaching and webinar environments with online tools such as CourseWorks (Canvas), Zoom, polls, slides, videos, breakout rooms, and other online resources. Provide all technical support to the instructors, students and event panelists. Also, video recording and processing role play sessions and lectures. Training and details of support will be provided.
For on-site classes and events: assist in training and assisting faculty, staff, administrators and students on the use of multimedia equipment in the classrooms and conference rooms, and other multimedia spaces. Receive and troubleshoot calls for multimedia questions. Setup, test, and monitor audio-visual (AV) setups for special events. Depending on time of shift responsibilities can include the following: unlocking, checking, shutdown and locking up equipment in the classrooms, conference rooms, and other multimedia spaces in the School of Social Work. Training and details of support will be provided.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor???s Degree or Associates Degree with 2 years audio visual and technology related work experience required.
1-2 years relevant experience; with experience troubleshooting audio visual and media services technology required.
Must possess good written, oral and interpersonal communication skills with a strong dedication to high quality customer service.
Must demonstrate a consistent commitment to supporting teamwork within the group.
Proven proactive problem-solving skills and ability to work under stress and time pressure, required.
Proven ability to organize/coordinate workload independently among constant deadlines and shifting priorities.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks under short and changing deadlines, while ensuring timely and accurate execution.
Must be detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and have the ability to think creatively while working both independently and as part of a team.
Working knowledge of Zoom Meeting and Webinar, Canvas, Poll Everywhere, Google Apps, PowerPoint/Keynote, Panopto.
Working knowledge of current Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.
Works within the guidelines provided in all policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
Industry recognized technical certifications a plus
Knowledge of the use and design of audio visual hardware and instructional software
Experience with learning management systems such as Canvas
Prior experience working with faculty in a higher education environment
Demonstrated leadership and project work experience preferred
Advanced level of knowledge in troubleshooting a broad range of audio visual issues
Experience with editing software such as FinalCut Pro, ProTools or Adobe Premiere a plus.
This job may require loads of up to 40 pounds be lifted/moved
Other Requirements
The work schedule is approx. August through December 2022 with the possibility of the Spring term from January through May 2023.
Depending on schedule and availability, each class is approximately 2.5 - 3.5 hours, and multiple classes may be assigned.
Hours of support primarily range from 6:00pm - 10:30pm ET Mondays; 8:00am - 8:30pm ET Tuesdays and Thursdays; 8:00am - 10:45pm ET Wednesdays; 9:00am ??? 4:30pm ET on Saturdays, and some other single events and weekend work for student related assignments or events.
The minimum number of hours per week is 6 hours. The maximum number of hours per week is 20 hours.
Training will be provided.
Onsite work will be determined by the Columbia University and School of Social Work policies and COVID-19 safety guidelines.
