School: Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School Position: Part Time School Nurse
Heschel Day School, a community Jewish day school, seeks an organized, compassionate School Nurse to begin in the 2022-23 school year.
The School Nurse supports school by providing students and employees with first aid or evaluating their need for other forms of care and referring them to the appropriate resources. The School Nurse also consults with and provides advice to division heads, teachers and others regarding students’ specific health issues which may impact their learning experience during school hours. This position also provides advice to senior administrators regarding health issues as they relate to the school.
Responsibilities will include:
Performing a variety of clerical tasks such as processing, organizing, updating and maintaining student electronic health records, and inputting data into the school health data system
Ensuring updated annual health forms are received for each student before the start of school. This includes processing annual student health forms and reviewing for approval, including immunization records and health screenings – and coordinating follow ups with parents via email and phone regarding missing information to ensure receipt of forms prior to the start of school.
Maintaining and updating employee TB records
Coordinating and tracking annual CPR and first aid training for employees
Serving on the first aid team and assisting with the various aspects of the school’s Emergency Plan; assisting with first aid and emergency situations in a calm and efficient manner
Maintaining confidentiality of health records and health services
Maintaining an accurate daily electronic health log of students by charting in the electronic health records
Ensuring appropriate supplies are ordered in a timely manner and stored properly while keeping work area clean, organized, and presentable
Interacting with school personnel and parents with professionalism, friendliness, and respect
Supervise and implement the School Medication Policy, administering medication of various sorts including insulin (via pump or subcutaneous), inhalers, oral and intramuscular medication in accordance with RN licensure.
Meet with teachers and the Director of Finance and Operations to review student’s specific health issues that may impact the learning process or to provide for student’s safety and wellbeing
Maintaining records and documentation related to student and physician instructions and assisting with the health needs of students and school personnel who require over-the-counter medications, caring of acute illness, and monitoring of chronic health concerns
Generating health records and reports for daily and overnight school trips
Maintaining inventory of all emergency and health supplies including supplies for the nurse’s office, outdoor trips, day and overnight school trips, and classroom first aid emergency backpacks
Maintaining lists of students with special health issues and providing relevant information (within HIPAA guidelines) and medications to chaperones who will be supervising students on field trips or other off-campus activities
Evaluate employees who incur work related illnesses or injuries, refer employees to outside medical provider and follow up on the status of injuries and claims in conjunction with the Operations Office
Contacting parents, health care professionals, and paramedics as required by the nature of the emergency
Reporting suspected child abuse or neglect as per proper mandated reporter procedure
Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Operations to administer the school’s Emergency Preparedness program
Successful candidates will have:
Current licensure in California as an RN or BSN RN (licensed in California)
Valid First Aid, CPR and AED Certification from the American Heart Association
School Nurse Certificate and Public Health Certificate are desirable.
Minimum of an Associate’s degree in Nursing; Bachelor’s degree preferred
At least three years of experience in a relevant medical field - experience in nursing, preferably in a pediatric or school setting.
Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Google Docs, Gmail, Zoom, Chrome, and data management
Is aware of and follows the most up-to-date state and local health recommendations, mandates, and administrative guidelines
Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping with a high degree of accuracy
A receptive attitude of patience and understanding toward children with an illness or injury and parents with regards to sensitive issues
Demonstrated ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality
Ability to understand and consistently apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
Collaborative and collegial attitude with Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills as well as a high degree of adaptability and flexibility
Diligent and well-organized work habits, including initiative, professional judgment, and the ability to problem solve
Meticulous with a strong attention to detail and organization with ability to prioritize and balance various duties assigned
Demonstrates practical knowledge and use of judgment in student interactions -understanding limitations and when to request assistance for behavioral and/or medical situations
Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations, including students, parents, faculty, and staff
