A seasoned, trusted advisor and mentor with expertise in nonprofit & industry financial controls and compliance at scale
Arabella Advisors is searching for a part-time Senior Advisor to join our finance & accounting teams to support our client-facing Managed Organizations Finance team (see below for more information about this team). The Senior Advisor will provide advice, guidance, and support internally to our leadership team and externally to multiple Managed Nonprofit Organizations (MNPOs) clients. We seek a leader with deep -- 15 to 20+ years -- of technical expertise in financial controls and compliance at scale with expertise in the nonprofit sector, who has a passion for mentoring and guiding leaders and providing strong client service.
The Senior Advisor will report to Arabella’s Chief Operating Officer and work most closely with the Senior Director of Managed Organizations Finance.
Financial Advice- Serve as a key financial advisor and subject-matter expert to the Senior Director of Managed Organizations Finance and Arabella’s Managed Nonprofit Organizations (MNPOs), including helping to oversee financial controls, systems, and processes that handle over $1 billion in philanthropic investments.
Governance/risk/compliance- Serve as a trusted advisor and facilitator, assisting in identifying operational and financial risks and work with insurance brokers, MNPO leadership, and staff to protect the MNPOs from unnecessary risk. As needed, serve as a subject matter expert when dealing with financial professionals on a variety of compliance, regulatory, and business/industry topics.
MNPO Management and Boards- Provide consultative support regarding financial and management information analyses, reports, and recommendations, including communication of key financial information and reviewing and recommend financial policies to ensure adequate internal controls and maintain financial records in accordance with standard accounting practices.
Technology- Partner with Arabella’s COO, Senior Director of Managed Organizations Finance, and Chief Information Officer to advise on technology and systems that support business growth and client service, across key areas like ERP, finance governance, corporate performance improvement, and data visualization & analytics.
Investment- Provide thought leadership on MNPO investment portfolios, and, in partnership with investment advisors, provide guidance on due diligence, monitoring, performance measurement, asset allocation, maintenance, and management of investments to ensure maximum yields consistent within board-approved investment policy and parameters.
Support to Business Development team- Advise the business development team on areas of relevant expertise and provide general information about financial issues related to clients and other technical areas. As needed, participate in meetings with potential funders/donors and collaborate with client service and business development leadership to identify viable opportunities.
Support to the Senior Director, Managed Organizations Finance- Provide guidance in establishing, developing, executing, and as needed the operational coordination, of strategic compliance initiatives, while staying within desired risk and compliance parameters.
Team Leadership and Cultural Stewardship- Participate in promoting a positive workplace culture of collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and respect.

Arabella Advisors provides operations and management support to multiple nonprofit organizations, including the New Venture Fund, the Windward Fund, and the Hopewell Fund—all 501(c)(3) public charities—and the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a 501(c)(4). These managedorganizations house new and innovative public interest projects and nonprofits, as well as coordinate collaborative initiatives between donors and administer grants programs. While this position must be based in Washington, DC, please note that due to COVID-19,?all Arabella Advisors' offices are closed, and we continue to temporarily work in a remote environment.
When we reopen -- currently anticipated in early 2022 -- we will be returning to work with a hybrid workplace strategy to ensure continued flexibility for our staff, while deepening our strong culture rooted in collaboration and in-person interactions between colleagues. It is our expectation that once we reopen, Arabellans will generally work 2-4 days per week from the office and 2-4 days at home/remotely. To Be Successful in This Role, You’ll Need:
15 to 20 years of progressively responsible experience managing complex financial operations, including experience developing and maintaining internal financial controls, preparing budgets, analyzing organization-wide financial matters, writing financial reports, making formal presentations to governing boards, and organizational leadership.
10+ years of proven experience developing risk and compliance programs and frameworks in financial services.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation and an ability to train others on technical accounting matters.
Comprehensive knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost-control principles, including proficiency with nonprofit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), and familiarity with applicable nonprofit, state, and local regulations, particularly with respect to tax and charitable mission compliance.
Excellent ability to interpret and communicate regulatory guidance.
Excellent verbal and written communication, including the ability to communicate complex financial matters to non-financial personnel.
Excellent interpersonal communication and collaboration skills with people of diverse backgrounds.
Experience dealing with rapidly growing environments.
The ability to provide excellent service to internal and external clients, including being able to effectively guide teams to achieve service standards and carry out strategy, and identify service offering gaps and recommend and/or drive improvements.
Knowledge of accounting and financial packages software
The ability to take initiative for creating an inclusive environment and model and implement equitable policies, practices, systems, or strategies
Other Highly Preferred Skills and Experience
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in business or public/nonprofit administration, finance, accounting, or related field.
