Performs a variety of duties in support of the IU Student Health Center clinical laboratory, up to 29 hours per week. This includes greeting, intake, and processing of patients, phlebotomy, specimen collection, use of the Lab Information System (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EHR), answering and forwarding phone calls, other support and clerical duties as assigned.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Collect a variety of specimens for medical lab testing including venipuncture, throat swab, and nasal swab. Properly identify the patient prior to collection of sample and label appropriately. Distribute samples to appropriate department for testing. Use proper technique for collection and disposal of blood and bodily fluids. Instruct patients on the proper collections of saliva samples for COVID testing.
Intake and greet patients, properly enter orders in Laboratory Information System (LIS). Use SHC Electronic Health Record to receive provider's orders and resolve any problems with orders. Ensure provider collected samples are acceptable and labeled properly.
Give patient instructions for collection of samples, when indicated. Answer patient questions and ensure understanding of proper collection technique. Check samples for proper collection and labeling prior to allowing patient to leave.
High school diploma or GED.
6 months of phlebotomy and clinical laboratory experience.
Knowledge of principles of patient care, universal precautions related to blood and body fluids.
Use of computer software including electronic medical records, basic software programs.
Understanding of personal protective equipment and ability to perform tasks wearing appropriate PPE.
Ability to follow instructions in detail, ability to be attentive to patients' needs and concerns, organizational skills, ability to multi-task.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively to patients and other Student Health Center staff.
This position requires knowledge of proper technique specimen collection.
The phlebotomist/lab assistant is required to be conscientious and attentive to the patient's needs and well-being. Professionalism, confidence, and a caring demeanor are critical. This person should be able to stay calm and organized while performing multiple tasks at the same time.
Working Conditions / Demands
Repeatedly moving from sitting to standing position, bending, eye and body strain due to constant computer usage.
Standing for prolonged periods of time.
Wearing all levels of PPE in varied environmental conditions and for sustained time periods of time.
Computer hardware and software, phones, fax, printers, other equipment as needed for lab operations.
