Required Qualifications (As evidenced by attached resume) : Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree) . In lieu of a degree , an Associate's Degree and two years horticulture experience or a combination of education and experience equaling four years may be considered. Two years' experience in a Greenhouse or plant growth facility. Familiarity with greenhouse and growth chamber environmental controls. Ability to help maintain greenhouse mechanical equipment including peak vents, solar shades, and environmental control systems. Must be able to work one weekend shift of two hours (Saturday or Sunday) if needed and requested.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher degree) in Plant Science major. NYS certified pesticide applicators license.
Brief Description of Duties: Work under the direct supervision of the Greenhouse Curator in the maintenance and growing of plant collections for teaching and research. Act as a greenhouse grower and perform all the duties necessary to grow healthy, pest free plant material. Assist in general housekeeping. Evaluate and monitor insect populations and life cycles. Act as a liaison to the campus community on plant related issues. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision to achieve goals and have the ability to communicate effectively with greenhouse users, including faculty and students
Assist in growing and providing plant materials for Undergraduate Biology laboratories and campus programs. Assist with the display, labeling and classification of existing and new plant acquisitions;
Evaluation and monitoring of insect and disease problems. Assist curator in developing and implementing a working IPM (integrated pest management) program;
Assist in the educational development of plants and all greenhouse related programs.
Supervision of work study and student employees in the greenhouse
Provide information and support to the users of the Greenhouse facility, and act as plant information resource to the campus community. Maintain (water, prune, fertilize) plans in the Wang Center Lobby on a biweekly basis;
Use skills learned in the use of computers for the operations of the greenhouse.
Spraying of plant collections in accordance with NY State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations and licensing.
Monitor and maintain greenhouse growth chambers and plant bays including general housekeeping, solar shades, and peak vents.
Assist in equipment maintenance, mechanical ability.
