The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School of Greater Washington is seeking a special educator to work with students, teachers and parents in our Lower School for the 2021-2022 school year. This is a 30-hour a week part time position and includes full benefits.
The Learning Specialist will be part of a team of other special educators that work at the school through the Educational Support Services Department, providing a variety of strategies and interventions to students with diverse learning needs, both in and out of the classroom setting. In addition to providing direct remedial support to students, other responsibilities include design of individualized education plans, case management, chairing educational management team meetings and close collaboration with classroom teachers. Experience in co-teaching is preferred.
The learning specialist will be assigned to one grade and will support students in reading, writing, math and executive function skills. Training and experience in one or more research based multi-sensory reading methods is preferred. Familiarity with effective reading comprehension, writing and math programs for students with language-based learning disabilities is also necessary. The ideal candidate must have:
Master’s Degree in Special Education from an accredited university.
At least 3-5 years’ experience working with students with learning differences.
A high level of interpersonal skills to work with staff and parents dealing with sensitive and confidential issues concerning a child’s learning differences.
Experience in conducting parent meetings.
Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Faculty may be asked to perform their work responsibilities on campus and/or at home. In both settings, the teacher is required to maintain a professional environment.
While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in an alternative setting. Teachers are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day (contracted hours), regardless of the setting.
