Position Overview 

We are seeking an experienced, talented, and energetic Middle School Physical Education teacher (part time position, 8:15a - 1:00p with 30 min lunch, no additional benefits) for the 2019-2020 school year. This position reports to the Assistant Head of School and collaborates with the Middle School Dean of Students/Athletic Director on curriculum, instruction, and class management matters. The MS PE teacher is responsible for curriculum development and implementation of Middle School Physical Education Program (Grades 6 - 8). The program highlights fitness, wellness, athletic skill-building, and sportsmanship.  Students are exposed to traditional and non-traditional sports and athletic activities, in addition to team-building challenges and cooperative games. We seek a vibrant teacher who brings creativity, innovation, and a social justice lens to their teaching practice. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Design curriculum for and teach two weekly sections of Physical Education for each class in grades 6-8.
  • Supervise one section study hall for each class in grades 6-8. 
  • Write narrative progress reports twice a year, and communicate with parents regularly on curriculum and student progress.
  • Manage the Middle School Physical Education budget, including maintaining athletic equipment
  • Supervise students during break and lunch recess.
  • Additional compensated hours available to lead electives, coach middle school teams, or work in the after school program.

Requirements:

  • Have at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; academic program focus in Kinesiology and/or education-related fields preferred.
  • Have at least two years of teaching and coaching experience, preferably at the middle school level.
  • Have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively as a team member with teachers
  • Have a working understanding of progressive teaching practices, social-emotional learning, and cultural competency. 
  • Be able to successfully instruct and differentiate for students at different ability levels and with multiple intelligences. 
  • Have a nurturing and supportive tone with students, and establish and maintain a healthy and mutually respectful learning environment. 
  • Infuse lessons with energy and joy, inspire a passion for learning, and anchor curriculum in meaningful contexts for deep understanding. 
  • Communicate effectively with staff and parents. 
  • Background Check and CPR/First Aid certified 
  • Teaching credential, coaching education program (PCA) and/or master’s degree preferred

Our Campus and History Park Day School was founded as a progressive K-6 school by teachers and parents in 1976, and opened with 28 students and four teachers. By 1982, the student body had grown to 90 students, and Park Day moved to the Temescal neighborhood of North Oakland, CA. The school purchased a two-acre campus on 43rd Street in 1993. Today, our four-acre campus is often described as "glorious" and "a jewel." Mature trees, lush flower gardens, birds, squirrels, a ch...icken coop, vegetable gardens and quiet niches are enjoyed by all. Swings, climbing bars, sandy play areas, a large all-weather playing field, multiple climbing structures and a shaded gazebo combine to provide an exciting and varied outdoor area for all ages.
