Position Summary

The Taub Institute is looking for a part time temporary Research Assistant (RA) who will work under the supervision of the Division Chief and with the research nurse for the Patient-Oriented Research Platform. The RA, together with the research nurse, will serve as the key-person in recruitment of potentially eligible participants by serving as a liaison with the research teams and educating patients and volunteers seen by clinicians in the Division of Aging and Dementia about participation in clinical research studies. The tasks involve significant telephone interaction and occasional in-person interaction with patients and their family. 

Responsibilities

• Assisting Research Nurse in prescreening medical records and recruiting subjects (patients with Alzheimer's disease and other related disorders and healthy controls) in-person an/or by telephone for multiple clinical research studies.
• Informing investigators and Taub Institute study team regarding prescreening outcome.
• Carrying out standard participant recruitment procedure for protocol.
• Conduct weekly meeting with study teams to facilitate efficient participant co-enrollment.
• Performing basic cognitive screening assessments for recruitment.
• Conducting recruitment follow-up of interested research participants.
• Referring interested participants to study teams.
• Updating databases (Excel and Access) and assisting with preparation of reports.
• Eliciting information from interested research study participant in accordance with a structured interview.
• Coordinate between patients, clinicians, study coordinators, social worker, and staff to provide a comprehensive care.
• Level of complexity - assignments are complex, requiring technical proficiency and adeptness at ensuring efficient research participant prescreening and recruitment process.
• Supervision required - works under general or minimal supervision.
• Consequence of error - errors are usually difficult to detect and may results in favorable outcome in research participant recruitment and retention.
• Choice of action - requires initiative and judgement.
• Contact outside of work area - regular.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and at least one and one-half years of related experience or equivalent in education, training and experience. 

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of various related laboratory procedures and techniques preferred.
• Familiarity in EPIC a plus.
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

Other Requirements

• Ability to work with healthy volunteers, and patients with cognitive impairment and dementia and their caregivers.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including clinicians, principal investigators, research team members, community members, as well as patients with cognitive impairment and dementia and their families.
• Ability to multi-task, maintain attention to detail in a busy work environment.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with highly interactive research groups including clinicians, investigators and coordinators.
• Ability to use computers and learn new programs to collect data for a computer-based database; Must have basic typing skills, experience in data entry, MS-WORD, Excel, Zoom and internet use.
• Ability to perform work in a neat and orderly manner in accordance with safety regulations.
• Will require to complete training modules in IRB-approved courses such as Columbia University's Human Subjects Protection and HIPAA training modules.
