Department DEMA MARKETING AND COMMUNICATI (UA-MRKT-IUBLA) Department Information African American Dance Company African American Arts Institute (AAAI), UA-MRKT Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs Job Summary The African American Dance Company (AADC) is a performance course (A100 and A338) offered through the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies (AAADS) and managed by the African American Arts Institute (AAAI). The Company studies and performs movement traditions of the African diaspora and African American Culture. The Company's repertoire includes African dance styles, contemporary, modern, jazz, hip-hop, and various cultural forms. The Associate Instructor assists the AADC director with instruction, choreography, classroom management, and fulfills administrative duties related to the Company's function and the AAAI's mission. Note: This position is for Academic Year: 2021-2022, and is a 10-month academic appointment. Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Required Qualifications Accepted into Indiana University Bloomington in a graduate program with a minimum of 6 credit hours . Two years of dance experience at the collegiate or professional level. One year of experience teaching/directing an ensemble, or serving in other ensemble leadership roles. Enrollment and good standing as a full-time student in a graduate degree program at IU Bloomington. Formal training in Black dance traditions. Knowledge of dance traditions of the African Diaspora. Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of Black performance styles. Demonstrated excellence as a teacher and performer. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Facility in using Microsoft Word and Excel. Organization skills. A motivated, self-starter. Working Conditions / Demands The Associate instructor must:
The Graduate Associate Instructor must be a Bloomington campus student and may not concurrently hold a position as Associate Instructor, Graduate Assistant, or Research Assistant, nor be committed to other full-time employment. The person in this role will be expected to work evening hours and work weekend events as needed. Work Location Bloomington, Indiana Advertised Salary $18,000 stipend disbursed in 10 monthly payments, a 30-credit hour fee remission with a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester and 6 credit hours during the summer, and health insurance coverage from August 1, 2022 through July 31, 2021. Work Hours Academic Year: 2021-2022, 10-month academic appointment. 20 hours per week, 50 percent of Full-Time Equivalent. The ensemble class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Schedules may change each semester. The Associate Instructor is required to attend all auditions, class sessions, rehearsals, performances, meetings and other required events, some of which are scheduled on evenings and weekends, within and outside of Bloomington. A schedule of required events is shared at the beginning of each semester. At the ensemble director's discretion, the Associate Instructor must hold regular office hours, and work flexible hours on performance and course related materials.
