
TRAINER 3 (FIRE/EMS Instructor)
Department Description
Provides the delivery of EMS educational material specific to the EMT, Paramedic, CPR, Stop the Bleed and other EMS and Continuing Education Courses.
JOB SUMMARY
The Fire Department EMS Instructor provides instruction and training for classes offered by and through the UC Davis Fire Department, and participates in program planning, implementation, and evaluation of Fire and EMS courses and students

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average- weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work involves light exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
- UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e- cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in any discipline from an accredited institution. (AA degree and six years of professional experience may be considered).
- National Association of EMS Educators Instructor 1 certification, or CA State Fire Marshall Instructor 1A, 1B, and 1C certifications, or at least forty (40) hours of documented teaching methodology instruction in areas related to methods, materials, and evaluation of instruction
- Minimum of three years medical or allied health education, training, and experience. (6 years if highest level of education is an AA or AS degree).
- Knowledgeable about methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students.
- CA Certification/Licensure as EMT-Paramedic, EMT or other related medical license for EMS classes is required.
- Knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, and evidenced-informed clinical practice.
- Supervisory skills to assign work, monitor and evaluate progress and record student performance.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Experience using a computer, as well as related software to prepare presentation, record data, prepare reports, correspondence and maintain files.
- Skill to analyze data; derive conclusions from the analysis; generate solutions for correcting deficiencies; and produce comprehensive reports.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of Fire/EMS theory, practice, and trends.
- Knowledge of current EMS curricular content and education standards.
- Knowledge of the delivery of emergency medical services in the state of California.
- Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
- Knowledge of the CA State and CoAEMSP EMT and Paramedic educational program accreditation processes and standards.
- Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
- Skill to adapt EMS curricula to reflect State requirements, local needs, and national trends.
- Knowledge of adult learning theory and methodologies.
- Knowledge of competency-based education principles and methods.
- Skill to assess student performance and progress and to provide educational participants. Skill to adhere to established standards for educational quality.
- Skill to maintain complete, accurate educational records.
- Experience with online instruction via a course management system such as Canvas.
- Proven ability to manage and motivate professionals as a cohesive team.
- Experience in assisting, supervising, and evaluating instructors.
- Experience in assessment of educational programs in higher education.
