Overview The Office of Religious Life at Princeton University seeks a new Director of Chapel Music and of the Princeton University Chapel Choir. This almost 100-year-old ensemble of 70 SATB auditioned voices provides anthems for weekly Christian services at the Princeton University Chapel and for other events throughout the academic year. The Choir is composed primarily of current Princeton University students, although alumni, faculty, staff, and community members occasionally are admitted.
The Position reports to the Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel. It is 80% time, with no duties between approximately mid-June to mid-August. The position includes the full suite of University benefits.
Recruitment of Choir members Leading two rehearsals per week, or more as necessary. Performance of three choral anthems at each of the Sunday morning Chapel services when the University is in session. Performance at University ceremonies such as Opening Exercises and Baccalaureate. Performance at special services such as Maundy Thursday and Good Friday Recruiting and directing community members for performance on Christmas Eve. Performance of one major concert in each of the fall and spring semesters. Performance at occasional memorial services, vigils, etc. Performance of monthly choral vespers services
Maintaining the Choir payroll. Organization of bi-annual international concert tours. Organization of guest concerts and music meditation sessions. Participation in weekly liturgy planning meetings, bi-weekly staff meetings, and occasional staff retreats. Partnering, as appropriate, with staff of the Department of Music. Overseeing the provision of voice lessons by Music Department staff to Choir members
Working closely with the University Organist. Supervising the University Carillonneur. Relating to donors and to University alumni. Organizing the presence of guest instrumentalists and vocal soloists, as necessary
Production of brochures and publicity regarding Chapel performances. Overseeing maintenance of the several pianos in the Office of Religious Life.

Qualifications Master's degree in a related field and 10+ years of relevant experience.
Choral conducting experience within a liturgical context; expertise in the widest variety of pieces within the choral literature, and a commitment to music from every era and culture; strong understanding of the role of choral music in Christian worship and an eagerness to make the Choir’s liturgical offerings fit seamlessly with the progressive tone of other elements of worship services; Cultivation within the Choir of a warm spirit of support, community, and kindness, and personal attentiveness to individual choir members.
Ability to be a supportive and joyous colleague with a vibrant and multi-faith staff of 15 persons; understanding of the University’s academic mission and of the role of the Choir in students’ development and maturation.
