Department COMMUNICATION SCIENCE (BL-COMS-IUBLA) Department Information The Editorial Assistant (EA) works with the editorial leadership team of Communication Theory. The editor is Dr. Betsi Grabe, a professor in The Media School. The school consists of four different disciplines: Cinema and Media Studies, Communication Science, Journalism, and Media Arts and Production. These have strong undergraduate degrees, nationally ranked graduate programs, and world-class research spanning the breadth of current inquiry. The Media School is committed to building and supporting a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community of students, scholars, and staff. Communication Theory is a peer-reviewed journal of the International Communication Association that is published by Oxford University Press. It publishes original research and review papers from across a wide array of fields such as communication studies, sociology, psychology, political science, cultural and gender studies, philosophy, linguistics, and literature. The journal aims to be inclusive in theoretical and methodological approaches insofar as these pertain to communication theory. The journal is ranked 7th of 79 in the communication discipline and appears 4 times per year. Job Summary The Editorial Assistant will facilitate the peer review process for submitted manuscripts. This involves, but is not limited to, recognizing key topics of each manuscript and identifying qualified reviewers. The EA will communicate and coordinate with scholars worldwide on behalf of the editorial and publishing teams. Serving as the central point of contact on behalf of the editor, the EA will be expected to use technical and diplomatic interpersonal skills to meet the deadline-driven requirements of the journal without compromising quality. As an administrator of the online review and notification system, the EA regulates the time-critical flow of reviewer assignments and correspondence with reviewers and authors. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree. Attention to detail. Organizational skills, including ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Problem anticipation and problem solving skills. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with a wide diversity of individuals. Thorough knowledge of English grammar. Ability to work independently. Experience with academic publishing. Preferred Qualifications Graduate degree or coursework, including graduate-level research experience. Editorial experience. Working Conditions / Demands Standard office and/or remote work environment, with extensive computer use. Work Location Some or all work can be accomplished remotely. Work may also take place on the Bloomington, Indiana IU campus. Advertised Salary $20.00 per hour. Work Hours Approximately 13 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling.
